Firefighters learn leadership from experts

Morinville and area firefighters were joined over the weekend by firefighters as far away as Lloydminster for two sessions of education.

The event started Friday evening at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre with an entertaining and engaging presentation from Chief Rick Lasky.

Since retiring in 2011 from the Lewisville Fire Department after a long and distinguished career, Lasky has worked as a consultant through his company Five Alarm Leadership, LLC.
In addition to being the author of Pride & Ownership: A Firefighter’s Love of the Job, and co-hosting Command Post, a firefighting podcast, Chief Lasky gives presentations and speeches to firefighters like Friday night’s conversation.

“Chief Rick Lasky is a world renowned leader in the fire service and Morinville is very fortunate to have him,” said Morinville Fire Chief Brad Boddez.

Friday night’s topic was on the importance of leadership in the fire services.

Lasky was followed Saturday by a session from Paul Combs, a 21-year Ohio firefighting veteran who is an editorial cartoonist whose work appears in Fire Engineering Magazine, FireRescue Magazine and EMS. His cartoons often provide satire about Fire Services and EMS, as well as leadership.
