High flying weathervane honours memory of friend

Morinville – Motorists travelling south of town on Highway 2 have a new land marker in their peripheral vision: a full size airplane elevated 20 feet off the ground. The plane not only provides an interesting addition to the landscape in front of Syd and Nettie Spiker’s property in Sturgeon County; it serves as a fully functioning weathervane. But there is more to the plane than merely marking the entrance to the Spiker home or marking the direction the wind is blowing. Parent group working towards new school and community playground

Morinville Public Elementary School Parents Fundraising Association members have been actively raising monies for a new playground that will serve both the school’s growing number of students but also the community as a whole. The school has expanded from its initial 280 students in their first year to 420 students this school year, a number that surpasses the capabilities of the existing school playground, one MPESPFA President Leah Elzinga says was intended to accommodate 100 children. As the school is estimated to have 480 to 500 students in the 2014-2015 school year, parents are eager to get a larger playground project underway… […]

Morinville – Sirens screamed through the streets behind Morinville Community High School (MCHS) Wednesday morning as police, paramedics and firefighters arrived at the scene of a two-vehicle collision that claimed the life of two teenagers, sent another to hospital, and saw a fourth charged with impaired driving. Morinville Community High School sent two competitors to this year’s Skills Alberta competition held May 14 and 15 in Edmonton. The annual competition pits the province’s best students in a number of trades and skills against one another in a two-day competition. Alyson Benson is competing for the third time in the Graphic Design category and Samantha Ringuette will represent the school in Photography for the second time.
