County looking to residents to help shape growth

Sturgeon County – Residents have five opportunities over the next couple of weeks to help shape Sturgeon County’s direction over the next 30 years. As the County moves to the second stage of revisions to its Municipal Development Plan (MDP), it is looking for more public input in shaping that document.

Public engagement sessions held earlier this year allowed the County to draft a vision statement which captured residents’ vision of their community. The upcoming sessions are designed to determine the community’s values based on a variety of themes, including cultural vitality, responsible governance, social equity, economic health and environmental responsibility.

Canadians want American-style cable news

By Robert Jump

As my esteemed colleague has so astutely observed, there are always other opinions.

It appears that Mr. Dafoe’s argument has missed the mark entirely in regard to Quebecor Inc.’s license request by placing blame for something that hasn’t yet taken place, somewhere other than where it will squarely belong if it does: with Canadian television viewers.

Is American-style cable news coming to Canada?

By Stephen Dafoe

Quebecor Inc., owner of the SUN newspaper chain announced June 15 that it had applied to the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for a licence to operate a 24-hour English language news channel to be called Sun TV News.

Referring to the proposed all-news channel as “controversially Canadian,” Kory Tenecyke, Quebecor Media’s VP of development, said that the channel will take on “smug, condescending, often irrelevant journalism” as well as “political correctness” itself, something Tenecyke believes Canada’s main-stream media is rife with.

The world’s moved on

By Robert Jump

“The world’s moved on since then.”

I liked the phrase and what it implied the first time I read it. I believe the words were uttered by the main character Roland Deschain, a gunslinger, in one of Stephen King’s novels in the Dark Tower series. Deschain, equipped with a Colt Peacemaker, is transported somehow to a King envisioned Twilight Zone and utters the phrase in that context.

But the world, and those who populate it, really sort of work that way. The world revolves and unless there’s an earthquake or asteroid strike large enough to disrupt that rotation it just continues on as it always has. People don’t. People get stuck.

Champion Petfoods clears the air in Morinville

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – Those who live, work and shop in Morinville breathed a sigh of relief this week after Champion Petfoods activated a new $500,000 Plasma-Injector system on both its Morinville plants, a high-tech industrial odour control system that the company believes will significantly eliminate the smell created by the plant’s cooking process.

The new equipment, manufactured by Abbotsford-based UNIQAIR Technologies, uses plasma reactors to radiate air, dissociating the oxygen and water vapour molecules, rendering them far less noticeable to the nose.

Victims of domestic violence receive commitment from province

By MorinvilleNews.com Staff
Calgary – Three new pilot projects announced by the province will focus on supporting victims and breaking the cycle of domestic violence in high-risk families.

“Domestic violence has a devastating impact on not only the victims, but on families and communities as well,” said Minister of Justice and Attorney General Alison Redford. “We need to work together to prevent it. This goes far beyond the closed doors of a private home. It is a serious crime that affects far too many Albertans.” […]
