Base playgrounds benefit from County grant

CFB Edmonton – With the installation of new playground equipment completed, three playgrounds were officially reopened July 20, a rejuvenation made possible through a $250,000 grant from Sturgeon County. The quarter million in funding was granted last fall through the County’s Capital Agricultural/Recreation Facility Development Grant (CARF), a five-year program started in 2006 to support leisure and fitness facilities in the hamlets, towns and city that make up Sturgeon County.

New bylaws in the works for Morinville

Morinville – Council reviewed and gave first reading to three new bylaws at its July 13 regular meeting: a parkland bylaw, off-highway vehicle bylaw and a firearms bylaw.

The Town’s Parkland Bylaw has been crafted to reflect the popularity and trends in Morinville’s parks and sport facilities.

RCMP arrest person of interest in McCann case

Edmonton – A 38-year-old man wanted on a number of outstanding warrants was arrested without incident this morning at a rural residence outside Niton Junction. The Edmonton RCMP Emergency Response Team together with the Edmonton City Police Tactical Unit and the Fugitive Apprehension Sheriff Support Team (FASST) arrested Travis Edward Vader early Monday morning.

McCann vehicle found, person of interest sought

Edmonton – RCMP investigators and forensic experts are currently on location where the Hyundai Tucson owned by missing St. Albert couple Lyle and Marie McCann has been discovered. As Police consider the location to be a potential crime scene, they are not releasing the location for that reason.

Earlier this afternoon, RCMP released the photo and name of a person of interest in the McCann case. Police are currently looking for 38-year-old Travis Edward Vader, of no fixed address. […]

Festival numbers higher than anticipated

Morinville – The figures are in from this year’s St. Jean Baptiste Festival and festival chair Joel Chevalier couldn’t be happier with the results.

“Our goal was about 2,000 and we have estimates anywhere between 2,500 and 3,000-something went through,” Chevalier said of this year’s festival goers, adding that reports indicate there were times when the popular children’s game and craft tent had approximately 200 children under the awning. “You couldn’t move.”

Missing couple’s family appeals to public

Edmonton – The search for a missing St. Albert couple took a personal turn at RCMP “K” Division headquarters in Edmonton this afternoon. Bret McCann, the son of Lyle and Mary Ann McCann, was joined by his wife Mary-Ann and family friend Darrell Stang to talk to media about the couple who were last seen in St. Albert July 3 purchasing gas for their motor home. The vehicle was discovered engulfed in flames July 5, parked in an isolated cutline outside of Edson near Minnow Lake. The McCanns were reported missing July 10 after failing to meet a family member at a scheduled rendezvous.
