Letter: Morinville photo radar program concerns

I am a supporter of any enforcement initiatives that make our communities safer. I feel the public has been kept in the dark by our provincially elected officials relating to why we only see photo radar in municipalities versus rural Alberta. Alberta municipalities saw reductions in provincial funding in the late nineties. The province developed the Automated Traffic Enforcement Guidelines to allow municipalities to generate additional revenue within the boundaries of the municipalities… […]

Petition Bylaw receives First Reading

by Calli Stromner

Morinville – Under the watchful eye of approximately a dozen town residents, Council gave First Reading to Photo Radar & Red Light Camera Bylaw 1/2014, eliminating the use of photo radar or red light camera enforcement and ensuring all traffic enforcement within town limits is carried out by RCMP or Community Peace Officers. The bylaw was triggered by a petition submitted by Morinville resident Cliff Haryett on Nov. 15. That petition was deemed valid by Administration and was formally received by Council on December 10…. Petition looking to put the brakes on photo radar

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – If Sunshine Lake resident Cliff Haryett has his way; photo radar will be a thing of the past in town. Haryett is looking for 900 signatures for his petition to abolish photo radar in Morinville and intends to have all the signatures within 45 to 60 days.

“It’s all over safety,” he said. “They are trying to sell us photo radar and [I take issue with] their lack of transparency and their collecting money versus public safety. Few to no cross walk lights were put up, even though mega dollars have been collected [through photo radar] over the past few years.” … […]

Editorial: A different approach to traffic safety

You might have noticed two things if you happened to be driving westbound on 100 Avenue near the pump house during rush hour Thursday night: The photo radar truck was parked there looking eastbound for those rushing to get out of town, and a guy was standing on the sidewalk with a camera pointed towards the west. I was the man with the camera… […]

Morinville family calling on Morinville and province to curb speeding

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – She was named Zero, a name given to her because she looked like the dog in the Tim Burton film A Nightmare Before Christmas. But the death of the McClinton family’s beloved 15-month-old blue heeler / pit-bull mix has turned to a personal nightmare for the McClintons, one they don’t want to see happening again to someone else’s animal or child.

Michelle McClinton said the dog got loose from her property on 87 Street and Highway 642 Aug. 14. She believes the animal may have chased a rabbit across the highway towards the pump house. “She went across the street and apparently she was sitting on the meridian… […]

Editorial: Photo radar should be seen and less heard about

There are two kinds of laws society observes – the written and the unwritten, the enforceable and the unenforceable. Unwritten and unenforceable laws include stuff like letting those exiting an elevator do so before we pile in. Unwritten and unenforceable laws include holding the door for someone if they are within three paces behind you. Added to that list is letting someone with only one item go ahead of you and your cart full of groceries at the checkout. Written laws include stealing, assault and speeding… […]

Photo radar practices challenged

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – Photos believed to show a vehicle belonging to Morinville’s Automated Traffic Enforcement operator hiding behind the pump house near the East Boundary Road have prompted a few emails and a brief discussion in Council Chambers May 28.

Acting on previous information from Administration that the vehicle was instructed to operate with its nose visible to eastbound and westbound traffic, Morinville resident Linda Lyons sent the photos to Administration and media over the weekend… […]

Photo radar coming to Morinville

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – Photo radar will be coming to Morinville soon, a notion that will come as quite a surprise to those in the community who have received speeding tickets in the mail over the past few years.

Bruce Kaminski, owner of Independent Traffic Services (ITS), Morinville’s speed enforcement contractor, made a 20-minute presentation to Council June 12, outlining statistics, motivations for the program, changes in locations, and how the company will add photo radar to what is currently being used in town… […]

Editorial: Enforcement needs to be part of safety plan

The Town of Morinville held an open house last week to get some input on traffic and pedestrian safety in the community. Considerable efforts have been made this year to map out every speed zone sign, stop sign, yield sign, crosswalk sign, and all the other elements that advise people on the rules of the road. It’s a shame the whole project is a giant waste of time and money… […]

Traffic safety open house yields to resident suggestions

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – Tuesday night’s Traffic and Pedestrian Safety open house at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre drew less than 30 residents, but those residents had plenty of suggestions on what Morinville could do to improve safety on the streets and sidewalks around town.

The event was another phase in a Council ordered review of traffic and pedestrian safety included in the 2012 budget. Attendees had an opportunity to see where all crosswalks, stop signs, photo radar locations.. […]

Traffic and pedestrian safety open house set for Tuesday

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – The Town of Morinville is hoping residents will come out and provide their input into the community’s plans for traffic and pedestrian safety in town. The two-hour event takes place Tuesday night at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Debbie Oyarzun said the best way to participate in Morinville’s Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Review is to come to the open house itself. “We’ll have some large-scale maps up,” she… […]
