Lady Wolves tackle provincials

By Kent Lessard

Morinville – The MCHS Lady Wolves travelled to Chestermere for the 3A ASAA Provincial Basketball Championships this past weekend. The girls faced Camrose in their first game, a team that they had beaten twice and lost to in overtime once this season. Camrose is led by seven grade 12s and their experience showed as they came out and overwhelmed the young Lady Wolves in the first quarter. The Lady Wolves struggled with their pressure and turnovers helped Camrose build and early lead. The Lady wolves settled down in the 2nd quarter but they could not find the bottom of the hoop as their shots continued to fall short. Camrose went on to an 85-39 victory.

The girls then rebounded against Queen Elizabeth from Calgary. Led by some smothering defense, the Lady Wolves defeated the Knights 58-28.

In their final game the Lady Wolves played the Holy Rosary Raiders from Lloydminster. The Raiders came out strong as another slow start plagued the team. The Raiders had a 12-point lead going into the half. A fired up Lady Wolves team fought back in the second half to trail by only three with 2 minutes left. The team had five free throws to tie and take the lead but unfortunately they went to 0/5 giving Holy Rosary the chance seal the game as they drained a three to re-establish a six-point lead. That deflated the Wolves comeback and they fell 59-50.

Overall it was an exceptional season for a young team as they look forward to a promising future. I am very proud of their development.
