Morinville – A potentially dangerous and damaging situation was quickly contained by the Morinville Fire Department Thursday night. Morinville, Sturgeon County and Legal fire crews responded to a fire call at the Morinville Seed Cleaning Plant shortly after supper time.
Morinville’s Deputy Chief of Operations (DCO), Ken Thiemann, said the department received a call that there were flames on top of the building from the plant manager. “She was up there with an extinguisher and tried to put it out,” Thiemann said. “It was a pot bearing on the dust controller fan.”
The DCO explained the situation could have been far worse. “It could have gotten pretty ugly,” he said. “That’s a dust collector which is pretty explosive. There’s a lot of dust up there. The flames could have ignited it, but we got it in time. It didn’t go into the building.”
Morinville crews were elevated to the fire with the aid of Morinville’s new $1.2 million ladder and pumper truck. The DCO said the truck benefitted crews Thursday night. “It got our guys up there right away,” he said. “It got them up on top. The guys had the tools, broke in, wetted it down right away.”
