Sturgeon County – Summer programs offered in Sturgeon County saw an increase in attendance this summer over the previous one according to a report from Terry Cashin, Sturgeon County’s Manager of Community Services. In a briefing to councillors at the Sept. 27 meeting of Sturgeon County Council, Cashin said 638 attended County-run theme days this summer and 644 participated in County day trips. In total Community Services ran 30 day trips and 46 theme days.
“Those programs are very, very popular,” Cashin told councillors, adding the summer programs were filled to 90 per cent capacity.
But while the summer programs were popular with Sturgeon County residents, they also appealed to those living in the towns within Sturgeon County. General Manager Public Services, Peter Tarnawsky, said 35 per cent of participants in the County’s summer programs were town residents. Of that percentage, Morinville represented the largest share at 29.6 per cent, followed by Gibbons at 6 per cent, Bon Accord and Legal at 2 to 3 per cent each, and St. Albert at approximately 2 per cent. Redwater residents accounted for only .5 per cent of summer program participants.
In addition to the County’s summer programs, two family fun days were held – one in Calahoo and one in Coronado. The Calahoo event was better attended with 320 attending. Coronado’s event, plagued by poor weather, drew approximately 200 participants.
As of Monday, Sturgeon County had 51 children registered for preschool programs, 16 families registered for their Stay and Play program, 116 people registered for county-run fitness programs, and 17 registrants signed up for general interest programs.
