Kony Morinville

Prune this
Showing exactly where to cut and the basic principles of good pruning, maintenance, diseases and pests were some of the topics discussed by Brendan Casement, semi-retired horticulturist. He made a presentation to the 24 people who registered for the Tree Maintenance Pruning and Care Workshop held Saturday at an acreage near Morinville. Big ticket deal
Town of Legal employee Gizele St. Jean was busy selling tickets for the Big Valley Jamboree’s Small Town Saturday Night event to be held at the Legal Arena Apr. 28. Of the 1,200 tickets being sold at $60 each she said they sold more than 750 in a half hour. By early afternoon more than 85 percent of the tickets were sold. If there is sufficient demand a second outdoor venue with a live audio and video feed will be made available at a reduced ticket price.


Accordions all
Five of the 10 accordionists that performed at Heritage Lodge on Sunday afternoon were Orchestra Director Margaret Miller, Kathy Dahlberg, Yifei Zhang, Maria Janik-Boychuk and Monique Regimbald. The group performed 14 numbers, some of them solo, duets, a quartet and orchestra pieces. The music selection included Casey Jones, Askokian Farewell written for TV series Civil War, Hungarian Dance Number Four, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B, Saffron, and a Canadian connection with the song of a Calgary Regiment and featured in the movie Bridge over River Kwai, the Colonel Bogey March, Down By the Old Mill Stream and theme from Jurassic Park. –Lucie Roy Photo


Convention time
Morinville CWL member Simonne Chevalier and President Lillian Boddez were just wrapping up after the first day of convention. The Catholic Women’s League of Canada St. Paul Diocesan Council 56th Annual Convention is hosted by Morinville at the Rendez-Vous Centre from April 20-21. Boddez said the St Paul Diocese has over 600 members in 20 councils. They have more than 49 delegates registered for this weekend, travelling from places such as Fort McMurray, Legal, Bonnyville, Swan Hills, Whitecourt, Westlock, Clyde and Thorhild. This CWL theme is centered on faith and justice and women against poverty combined with Mother Theresa. Boddez said this year is significant because the CWL in Edmonton celebrated 100 years in February and the CWL started in the West and in Edmonton. The 65th Annual Provincial Convention will be held in Whitecourt in June. – Lucie Roy Photo
