Morinville – The Ray McDonald Sports Centre will play home to a community carnival for families next Saturday. The MPES Community Carnival: Growing with the Community event will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and organizers are expecting a great day of community building.

“We wanted to have a community building event where we have community organizations participate and showcase what they do for the community,” said Eva Scrimshaw, a member of the Morinville Public Elementary School (MPES) Parent Fundraising Association, the group organizing the event. “We also wanted the event to be family-friendly, and we’ve arranged plenty of fun family activities.”

Those activities will include a magic show by Kip the Court Jester, carnival games, face painting, balloon animals, an appearance by the A&W Root Bear, and a dunk tank sponsored by The Morinville News.

Scrimshaw said she has lined up a number of local people worthy of being dunked, all good-natured participants offering their help in the fundraiser. “We heard from the community that there were specifics members they would enjoy putting in the dunk tank,” Scrimshaw said. “They agreed and are excited to be part of the event.”

Lined up to be submerged are Paul Smith of Smith Music, realtor Linda Getzlaf, Community Peace Officer Eric Nicholson, MPES Principal Wayne Rufinage, Youth Volunteer of the Year Travis Loseth, Morinville News editor Stephen Dafoe as well as several other worthy dunkees.

Funds from the dunk tank and concession will go towards the group’s fundraising projects for the school. All other activities at the carnival are at no cost.

Also on hand will be a number of local organizations with booths. Scrimshaw said the Morinville Food Bank Society, Morinville Public Library, Morinville Community Gardens, Morinville RCMP, Youth in Action Committee and Town of Morinville Community Services Department will all be on hand with booths at the event. There will be others.

The event will take place rain or shine June 2 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. behind the arena, indoors if the weather is bad. For more information visit their Facebook page.
