Sturgeon County – Police are reminding motorists to be mindful of crossing animals after Morinville RCMP were called to a single vehicle collision involving a moose Monday night. The collision occurred on Highway 2 approximately 1 kilometre north of St. Albert. Morinville RCMP and the Morinville Fire Department attended the call.
Police determined a northbound vehicle collided with a moose, causing the vehicle to roll in the median. The 54-year-old driver of the vehicle was transported to St. Albert Hospital with undisclosed injuries. His 27-year-old passenger was uninjured.
The incident was the first of two Monday night – a few hours after the Highway 2 collision, RCMP received a report of two moose on Highway 28, just north of Hwy 37. A member attended the scene and used his emergency lights to alert motorists.
Police have seen an increase in collisions involving moose in Sturgeon County and are reminding drivers to be extra vigilant. They are asking drivers to slow down when driving at night, to scan both sides of the road as far ahead as possible, and to use extreme caution when an animal is spotted because a moose standing calmly at the edge of the road could bolt in front of a passing vehicle. Additionally, police are asking drivers to stay alert and not become distracted, to make sure windshields are clean and to drive with high beams unless approaching or overtaking traffic.
