Collision east of Gibbons sends four to hospital

Gibbons, Alberta – Earlier this evening, on May 15th, 2015, Morinville RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 28A at the junction of Highway 643, east of Gibbons.

Investigation revealed that a west bound SUV collided with a north bound semi travelling on Highway 28A.

The driver and lone occupant of the semi received minor injuries in the collision.

The SUV had four occupants on board: two adults and two young children, all with serious life threatening injuries. The two children have been transported by STARS to the U of A Hospital and the two adults have been transported to the Royal Alex Hospital by ground ambulance.

Alcohol, speed and road conditions are not believed to be factors in the collision.

The investigation is on going by the Morinville RCMP with the assistance of a Traffic Reconstructionist.

Highway 28A at the junction of Highway 643 remains closed, but is expected to re-open later this evening.

UPDATE MAY !8 – The 58 year-old female passenger of the SUV has died of her injuries while being treated at the University of Alberta Hospital. The female passenger had been transported from the Royal Alexandra Hospital to the University of Alberta hospital for continued medical treatment, where she remained at the time of her death this afternoon. The 21 year-old female driver remains in serious but stable condition. The 8 month old girl has since been released from hospital. The 4 year-old girl remains in hospital in stable condition. The investigation into the collision remains under investigation. The names of individuals involved will not be released in accordance with the federal Privacy Act and Regulations.
