Lots to do during National Youth Week

by Morinville News Staff

Several events are planned for National Youth Week (May 1-7), a week dedicated to celebrating youth and their active involvement in the community. The Town of Morinville has events planned for the after school period from May 3 to 7. Whether they are into sports, music or art, organizers promise a variety of activities.

“We believe that National Youth Week is important to the community because it is a great way to celebrate youth, and show them how appreciated they truly are,” said Town of Morinville Youth Worker Tara Modien. “National Youth week is our way of giving youth opportunities to participate in different activities and recognize volunteer opportunities.”

Morinville will team up with volunteers from the Sturgeon Youth Council and Morinville Youth to put on several events.

The first event, a Youth Carnival open to those between the ages of 11 and 17, will take place Monday, May 4 at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre from 3:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. The event includes a number of free activities: sumo wrestling suits, jousting, a basketball shoot-out as well as other games and prizes. Slush, cotton candy, hotdogs and popcorn will be available for a nominal fee.

The second event takes place May 5 at the Bob Foster Skate Park and is also open to youth between the ages of 11 and 17. The Urban Art in the Park gives budding artists an opportunity to paint their own Skate Park.

The final event takes place May 7 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre. Area bands Seventh Gear and If We Were Kings will perform a free show for those who bring student ID from Georges H. Primeau, Morinville Public School, Morinville Community High School or Sturgeon Composite High School. Food and drink will be available for a cost of $2. CDs from the bands will be available at intermission.

“All the events happening this week are important because they show how diverse our community can be,” Modien said. “If we had to choose one that is the highlight of the week it would be the carnival. It is the kick off to the week. Therefore, it will set the tone for the rest of the week. It will have various activities promoting an active lifestyle and healthy competition. This event is sure to be a great time for all.”
