Town to support getting LAV monument to honour Canadian Forces

by Tristan Turner

Following a unanimous vote from Council, the Town will be supporting an application by Morinville resident and veteran Jason Wood to receive a decommissioned Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) as part of a monument. The new LAV monument program operated by the Department of Defence (DND), private businesses/sponsors and local communities provides an opportunity for worthy communities to receive one of the decommissioned units.

While Wood is hopeful sponsors and partnerships can be found to lower or eliminate the upfront cost of the monument, he said the project could end up costing up to $42,000. Although Council voted in favour of supporting the application, they did not agree to allocate any money to the project yet.

Following this motion, Council has agreed to send a letter of support and allowed Town Administration to work with Wood to find a potential spot for the monument. Wood said his preference was near the east end of town, towards CFB Edmonton.
