Legal – Voters went to the polls Monday to select five of seven candidates to serve on Legal Town Council. Unique among communities in Sturgeon County, Legal does not hold a vote for mayor. Rather, the elected council, once sworn in, will hold an organizational meeting to select from amongst their number one to serve as mayor.

This year’s election saw incumbents Albert St. Jean, Ken Baril, Phil Hughes, Gena Bennett and Cassandra Oullette joined by political newcomers Trina Jones and Lisa Magera.

When voting closed Monday night, the ballots lined up in favour of incumbents Albert St. Jean, Ken Baril and Phil Hughes, who will be joined by newcomers Lisa Magera and Trina Jones. Incumbents Gena Bennett and Cassandra Oullette did not garner enough votes to secure their re-election bids.

The breakdown of votes was as follows:

  1. 238 Ken Baril
  2. 236 Albert St. Jean
  3. 191 Phil Hughes
  4. 182 Lisa Magera
  5. 130 Trina Jones
  6. 116 Gena Bennett
  7. 105 Cassandra Oulette

Legal’s regularly scheduled council meeting fell on Election Day. As election results do not become official until four days after the election, the new council will hold their first meeting Oct. 25, prior to which councillors will be sworn in and hold an organizational meeting to receive committee appointments.
