National Column: Five unexpected developments in Bill C-14 debate

The time-sensitive production of a Charter-compliant federal law on medically assisted death was always going to be a logistical challenge for whomever was elected to power last October.

On that basis, the fact that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government missed Monday’s court-imposed deadline to prevent a legal void is probably the least unexpected development in the legislative saga that has consumed MPs and senators over the first session of the new Parliament. […]

Editorial: Thank you for six years of solid support

I started MorinvilleNews.com six years ago this upcoming Saturday when a local newspaper I was then freelancing for decided to suspend publication. Faced with the prospect of living in a community with only one regional news source and no paper with a true Morinville focus, I decided to offer one. Starting with the slogan “Get the news while it’s still news,” MorinvilleNews.com launched as a digital daily with a commitment to living up to the slogan I had chosen. […]

Van Dijken swings against carbon tax on behalf of commuter communities

The Wildrose Shadow Transportation Minister was critical Monday of the government’s plan to increase fuel prices for all Albertans.

The province’s carbon tax will add 4.5 cents to gas prices in January of 2017 and 6.7 cents in 2018. Diesel prices are set to go up more with a 5.35 cent hike in 2017 and to 8.03 cents in 2018. […]

Column: Joe Morinville

Since the owner of this rag decided to go off to a political convention for a week, he told me I’d better put together some of my great wisdom for the paper. Now that the good weather is here, I ain’t felt much like writing my thoughts down on account of I’m enjoying tinkering with the old car and figuring new ways to keep the cats out of the missus’ garden so I don’t go to listen to her hollering about the neighbourhood cats going poo in the pansies. Fryters said he was sponsored to be a club member by Charter member Peter (Pete) Gibeault in 1984. Before Gibeault passed in 2003, he made Fryters promise to keep the Lions club going. Fyters said, ‘OK, I will try.’ […]

It’s another weekend of something for everyone June 24 to 26 as the seventh annual St. Jean Baptiste Festival kicks off summer in Morinville.

Morinville & District Chamber of Commerce holds AGM

The Morinville & District Chamber of Commerce held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday with less than 50 members in attendance.

The 2016-17 Board of Directors includes Simon Boersma serving another year as Chamber President, and Samantha Olson of Putnam & Lawson as the business group’s Vice President. Olson had previously served as a Director on the 2015-16 Board. Both positions were acclaimed. […]

National Column: In spite of Trudeau, G7 gets failing grade

Last week’s G7 meeting in Japan was an opportunity missed.

The leaders of seven important countries, including Canada, had a chance to do something that would rekindle the sputtering global economy. Some, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Canada’s Justin Trudeau, tried to convince the group to do just that. […]
