Korean War veteran recalls his time in the navy

By Lucie Roy

Cardiff – John Hamilton sits at a table holding a picture taken at the age of 18 when he was in the Royal Canadian Navy. Although it’s been 60 years since the end of the Korean War, the memories of his time serving in the navy during that conflict and beyond are like it was yesterday when he was young and felt indestructible.

Hamilton said he took his training at Cornwallis after he joined the navy in 1951 as a cadet. “Cornwallis was all navy then,” he said. “RCN forever.” He went to the naval airbase… […]

Column: Joe Morinville

My Facebook page lit up last week with all the folks I know yapping about the royal baby and when it was going to be born and what it might be called when it was born. I know I shouldn’t call him it but he was an it before we knew it was a him. He finally came out, no doubt on a gold fringed pillow, and his folks Kate and Billy give him his name. It got me to thinking about that and baby names… […]

Editorial: Economic development is not a video game

SimCity is a video game introduced to the market in 1989 that has allowed gamers to be urban planners for the past quarter century. You start with a blank piece of undeveloped land, plop down some houses, some commercial lots and a road to connect the two areas, then sit back and watch people move in and begin to travel on the roads… […]

Country singer’s devotion to music is taking him places

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – Justin Hogg is a familiar face in Morinville’s music scene, having performed frequently at school and community events for a number of years. But the 20-year-old singer / songwriter’s dedication to his craft is taking him to new gigs and new opportunities outside the community. In the past six months Hogg has opened for two major country music artists. He’s hoping to one day enjoy the same success as those he has opened for.

“I’m really looking at going commercial with my music and bringing it to the radio and promoting it that way,” Hogg said, adding he would love to have more people hear his music. “It’s just expanding, really. Taking bigger steps in my career.”.. […]

Morinville man working in three dimensions

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – A whirring and beeping box the size of a 1980s microwave sits on a coffee table, its robotic arm tracing patterns in melting plastic as people gather around to watch the machine’s programed dance. Named the Replicator, which is no doubt a nod to the Star Trek device that would churn up a cup of coffee or some exotic alien alcohol for Jim Kirk and his crew, the device is a far cry from the sci fi unit that could create something out of nothing in a fraction of a second. Despite its slowness, Trevor Meister finds his 3D printer fascinating… […]

Morinville businessman running for Council

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – Coach’s Corner owner Lawrence Giffin is the fifth resident to declare they will run for Council in the fall election. Giffin has lived in Morinville for the past four years and has been an active volunteer during that time, most notably with the Morinville Lions Club and through his work on a number of local fundraisers for breast cancer, autism and the Midstream Support Society’s Santa Store.

Giffin said he is a person who likes to make a difference and fells the only way to do that is to be part of the process. It is that belief, combined with some concerns about how things have been done, that prompted him to take a run at a Council seat… […]
