Mandatory insurance rates to drop five per cent this fall

In response to its annual insurance rate review, the Automobile Insurance Rate Board (AIRB) has directed the province’s automobile insurers to reduce premiums on mandatory automobile insurance by five per cent this year, effective Nov. 1.

Assault suspect sought in Gibbons

Gibbons – RCMP are looking for witnesses who may have seen an assault that took place on Lunnan Drive Tuesday evening. At approximately 5:30 p.m. a homeowner was assaulted on the street while attempting to enter his parked vehicle. The assailant was not known to the victim, but is described as a male in his late teens to early 20s.

Last Friday RCMP received a complaint from a resident who received a call from someone pretending to be from Guardian Drugs or another pharmacy. The caller told the intended victim their prescription was being held until they gave the caller the credit card and other personal information.

Morinville – RCMP investigators are looking into a complaint by two teenage girls that a man exposed himself to them last Thursday. The girls, aged 13 and 14, told RCMP they were walking near the Teen Centre on 99 Ave. and 104 St. around 8:30 p.m. when a man in his early 20s exposed his genitals to them.

Telus scam making the rounds

Sturgeon County – An Internet scam is making the rounds hoping to target Telus.net users. The e-mail, sent to undisclosed recipients, asks users to help Telus update their database by replying to the e-mail with the recipient’s username and password if they are the legitimate owner of the account. The e-mail goes on to tell readers that failure to do so within the next seven days will result in the e-mail account no longer working.

Young driver clocked at 80 km/hr over speed limit

Morinville – An Edmonton man will appear in court Sept. 14 to answer charges that he was driving 80 km/hr over the speed limit.

The 19-year-old, who is not being identified by RCMP, was stopped July 19 after a Morinville officer saw a vehicle heading southbound on Hwy. 2 near Township Road 572, travelling much faster than it should have been.

Government funding to help Chamber attract tourists

Morinville – The province is sending $70,000 the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce way, grant money from the government’s Department of Tourism, Parks and Recreation that the local business group will use to fund a Regional Tourism Action Plan (RTAP).

Chamber President Sheldon Fingler said he was pleased but not surprised to receive the funding announcement from Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA Ken Kowalski last week.

Mischievous in Bon Accord

The Bon Accord Food Town was a target for vandals between July 18 and 19. Morinville RCMP report that someone climbed up on to the roof of the grocery store and damaged the chimneys and other roof-top structures. Entry to the business was not gained and police say the damage to the roof structures was done to vandalize rather than an attempt to gain entry.
