MPES seeking Council funding for new playground

by Tristan Turner

At Council’s last meeting before summer recess, Leah Elzinga, President of the Morinville Public Elementary School (MPES) Parent Fundraising Association, made a presentation on proposed new playground equipment to meet the needs of the rapidly growing school, and made a financial request of Council to help support the project. While council confirmed no funding at the meeting, they unanimously supported a motion to have Administration investigate ways the Town might be able to financially support the new equipment and return that information for Council’s August meeting… […]

Council seeking photo enforcement proposals

by Tristan Turner

Morinville – Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) contractors could soon be presenting their offers to the Town of Morinville after Council voted 5-0 in favour of sending out a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the service. The RFP follows the Town’s purchasing policy and, because an annual photo enforcement contract is typically greater than $75,000 per year, the RFP will also be submitted on the Alberta Connect Website in accordance to the internal trade agreement (TILMA) guidelines… […]

Letter: Hockey arena or regional recreation facility – SO many questions – so little time!

I would like to thank our Council for the Open House held on April 28th. It was good to see more people attending this and sharing their views. Also, I would like to thank the group who prepared the Feasibility Study as this document actually included nasty topics such as – ‘capital costs’; ‘operating costs’; ‘revenue generation’ ‘cost overruns or deficits’ and not just the community wants and desires…. Letter: If you build it, the will come…

I just want to say thank you to our Town Administration and Councillors for their continued effort on April 28 in getting information out to the public in regards to a Regional Recreation Facility. Letter: Regional Recreational Complex or a Local Arena/Curling Complex?

Morinville Council is rapidly moving forward on a decision that will have an important effect on the long-term growth of Morinville and Sturgeon County. This decision will be to either start building a replacement Arena/Curling complex right away ( inside Morinville boundaries) or work with Sturgeon County, Legal, Bon Accord, Gibbons, Redwater and a variety of ‘other groups’ to develop a more comprehensive Regional Complex that would probably proceed within the next three years… […]

Letter: Photo radar not about safety

After taking in all the discussion about photo radar, we all must make our own decision, and mine boils down to one factor. Safety.
I’m not talking about a reduction in speeders. If you change a speed limit from 50km/hr to 60km/hr (as was done on 100 Street by No Frills), you’re going to have a reduction in speeders, but that improvement isn’t due to photo radar… […]

Conservative Views: Whose Budget is it Anyway?

If the tone of a Council’s term is defined by the first major decision of its mandate, the road is about to get bumpy for administration. The chest-thumping and calls for accountability voters saw from candidates last fall intensified in the final hours of budget debate on March 11 and saw senior administration enter in to an awkward and inappropriate debate over program funding with individual Councillors… […]
