Seventeen running for six seats in Morinville Council race

Morinville – The close of Nomination Day Monday saw 17 residents filing papers for six Council seats, a number seven higher than the 2010 race and 11 higher than 2007’s acclaimed Council.

The 48-year-old father of two spent 27 years in the regular army and retired last year as Logistics Officer with a rank of Major. Morinville – Council took advantage of their last opportunity to spend some money by dealing with the latest intake of Community Grant applications. Council weighed the merits of four grant requests for a total of $6,274, granting two applicants the full amount and offering to support the other two in other ways.

Boddez appointed Morinville mayor

Morinville – The community has a new mayor, at least until the next one is sworn in after the Oct. 21 election. Councillor Gordon Boddez was appointed mayor Tuesday night during the Aug. 27 meeting of Morinville Town Council. He fills the mayoral vacancy left by the June 30 passing of Morinville Mayor Paul Krauskopf. After beign appointed mayor, Boddez was sworn in and resumed his regular Council seat and not the chair reserved for mayor.

The discussion was the first order of business at Council’s Aug. 27 meeting. Deputy Mayor Lisa Holmes took nominations from the floor and Councillor Sheldon Fingler put forward Boddez’ name. Boddez was appointed mayor with a unanimous vote of Council… […]

Boutestein looking for a second term

Morinville – A love of community and a love of the job she’s held for the past three years are prompting Councillor Nicole Boutestein to seek a second term on Morinville Town Council. She says she does not consider herself a politician and has no intention of ever becoming one. Rather, the life-long resident of Morinville sees herself as someone elected by voters to do a job. She is hoping those voters will elect her to that job once again this fall.

“It is a job. It’s a full-time job,” Boutestein said, adding she puts in about 40 hours each week. “It is a job I have to say I really love. I get up in the morning and I’m happy to go to work.”… […]

Turner looking to return to Council table

Morinville –Former councillor Barry Turner is looking to return to the table for another term on Council six years after completing his last. Turner, 39, was first elected to Council at the age of 21 and served for four terms between 1995 and 2007. Turner decided to step away after four terms to spend time with his young family and to apply a little more attention to his professional career.

“I had put a lot of time and effort and had went full bore in terms of putting everything I could into fulfilling my Council duties,” Turner said of his initial run on Council, adding he and his wife had their third child during his third term on Council… […]

Morinville businessman running for Council

Morinville – Coach’s Corner owner Lawrence Giffin is the fifth resident to declare they will run for Council in the fall election. Giffin has lived in Morinville for the past four years and has been an active volunteer during that time, most notably with the Morinville Lions Club and through his work on a number of local fundraisers for breast cancer, autism and the Midstream Support Society’s Santa Store.

Giffin said he is a person who likes to make a difference and fells the only way to do that is to be part of the process. It is that belief, combined with some concerns about how things have been done, that prompted him to take a run at a Council seat… […]

Morinville – After living in the community for six years, 31-year-old Fort McMurray Native Rob Ladouceur said he is certain of two things: Morinville is where he wants to continue to raise his family, and Morinville is where he wants to make a difference. Morinville – A community is in mournimg after the news Morinville Mayor Paul Krauskopf has died. Krauskopf, 63, was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 and continued to serve the community as councillor – and subsequently mayor – until his death June 30.
